The "Animal Krackers," a variety of cheerful forest creatures, meet to entertain each other, but the hungry Lion appears, forcing them to turn their attention to saving their lives. They devise an ingenious plan to divert the Lion's thoughts from food to their delightful stories. "The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf" becomes a serial interspersed with other tales, such as "The Tortoise and the Hare" and "Androcles and the Lion," in which the starving Lion is asked to play a role. The fables must eventually come to an end, however, so the Animal Krackers must develop yet another plan to save themselves from the Lion's jaws.
